Manchester United takes a U-turn in Mason Greenwood return saga after backlash

Greenwood, who has scored 35 goals in 129 appearances for United, has not played for the club since January 2022.

Premier League club Manchester United have reportedly changed their stance on bringing back Mason Greenwood to the first team after facing a strong backlash from the fans. The 21-year-old striker has been suspended by the club since January 2022, when he was arrested and charged with attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behaviour against his girfriend. He denied all the charges and was later cleared by the Crown Prosecution Service.

According to The Sun, the club’s CEO Richard Arnold had planned to release a video next week explaining his decision to reinstate Greenwood into Erik ten Hag’s squad. However, the news leaked into the media and sparked outrage among the supporters, who expressed their anger and disappointment on social media and online forums.

The Sun claims that Arnold has now shelved the video and is reconsidering his decision, as he realizes that there is no way back for Greenwood at Old Trafford. The club had conducted its own internal investigation into Greenwood’s conduct and had come to the conclusion that he deserved a second chance. However, the fans’ reaction has apparently forced them to rethink their stance.

Notably, The Athletic had conducted a survey among United fans and found that 58% of them voted that Greenwood should never play for the club again. Another 8% said they would stop supporting the club if he returned, while 7% were unhappy with how the club handled the situation.

Greenwood, who has scored 35 goals in 129 appearances for United, has not played for the club since January 2022. He was one of the brightest prospects in English football before his career was derailed by the allegations.

It is unclear what the future holds for Greenwood, who is still under contract with United until 2025. He may have to look for a move abroad or to a lower division club if he wants to revive his career.

Manchester United have not officially commented on Greenwood’s situation and are expected to make an announcement soon.
