About Rashid Khan

From a young age, Rashid displayed a natural talent for cricket. He honed his skills playing in the streets of his hometown before receiving formal training. His rise to prominence coincided with Afghanistan’s emergence as a competitive cricketing nation on the global stage.

Rashid Khan made his debut for the Afghanistan national cricket team in 2015, and since then, he has been a vital cog in the team’s success. His unorthodox leg-spin bowling style, combined with his ability to deliver variations with pinpoint accuracy, has troubled even the best batsmen in the world.

One of Rashid’s most significant achievements came in 2018 when he became the youngest captain in the history of international cricket. Despite his young age, he led Afghanistan with maturity and determination, inspiring his teammates with his on-field performances and strategic acumen.

Rashid’s prowess in the shortest format of the game, Twenty20 (T20) cricket, is particularly noteworthy. He has been a standout performer in various T20 leagues around the world, including the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Big Bash League (BBL), and the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). His ability to consistently take wickets and contain opposition batsmen has made him a sought-after asset for franchise teams.

Career

Domestic career

IPL Career

Rashid Khan, considered one of the best white-ball spinners, joined the Gujarat Titans for a whopping INR 15 crore in the 2022 IPL auction. Despite a challenging upbringing in Afghanistan, his talent and dedication propelled him from tennis-ball cricket to the biggest leagues. Since his IPL debut in 2017, Khan has impressed everyone with his bowling skills. He played a key role in propelling Sunrisers Hyderabad to the 2018 finals, finishing as the second-highest wicket-taker. A highly sought-after player in T20 leagues worldwide, his experience makes him a formidable opponent.

International career

Test Career

Rashid Khan, a key player in Afghanistan’s inaugural Test debut against India (June 2018), impressed with his spin but proved expensive (2/154). He bounced back with a five-wicket haul against Ireland and became their youngest Test captain (20 years old) in September 2019. In the same match, he scored his maiden Test fifty and achieved a historic feat – the first ever 10-wicket haul for Afghanistan, leading them to a dominant win. He repeated this feat against Zimbabwe, securing another win for his team.

ODI Career

Rashid Khan’s ODI career exploded early. After a quiet debut, he picked up impressive spells against Ireland (4/21, 6/43) and Zimbabwe (5/24). He even achieved his career-best figures (7/18) against West Indies. He rose to become the number one ODI all-rounder, but his performance dipped in the 2019 World Cup, where he only managed 6 wickets with a high economy rate. Notably, he conceded the most expensive spell ever in a World Cup match (110 runs, 0 wickets).

T20 International Career

Rashid Khan debuted in T20Is just days after his ODI debut, taking 1 wicket against Zimbabwe in October 2015. He holds the record for the fastest bowler to reach 100 wickets (44 games) and boasts an impressive average (14.21) and economy rate (6.25) with 118 wickets in 71 matches. He’s participated in two T20 World Cups (2016, 2021) and was selected for the 2022 edition as well.

Family

Rashid Khan, born in 1998 in Nangarhar, Eastern Afghanistan, originates from Jalalabad and comes from a family of ten siblings. During his youth, his family sought refuge from the Afghan war and spent some years in Pakistan before returning to Afghanistan. Rashid resumed his education upon their return. He developed a passion for cricket early on, playing with his brothers, and drew inspiration from players like Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi and South African batsman AB de Villiers, even emulating Afridi’s bowling action.
