Facing Novak Djokovic is tough, and getting past him is tougher. Come the Grand Slams, winning against Djokovic requires something special, and just about every player is aware of that. On Wednesday, Stefanos Tsitsipas posted a four-set win over Jordan Thompson of Australia, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2, 7-6, and legendary John McEnroe couldn’t stop asking the winner, ‘You’ve reached 2 Slam finals. What’s it gonna take to get over the hump?’.
For context, Tsitsipas reached the finals of the Australian Open 2023, and French Open 2021, but lost on both occasions against Djokovic. To this query, Tsitsipas replied, “Numbers don’t lie. Novak has won here 12 times. He’s a very selfish person. I think he just needs to wake up one day & get less selfish. Sharing is caring more type of vibe. There are 2 scenarios. Someone needs to beat Novak that’s not me. Or it has to be me. We’ll find a way.”
In the third round, Tsitsipas is scheduled to play Luca Van Assche of France, but the day of the match is not decided as yet. Meanwhile, Djokovic is currently playing against Australia’s Alexei Popyrin and has won two sets.
